Bike Bus

A Bike Bus carries a group of children to school in the same way a regular school bus does, except everyone is on bikes. The “bus driver”—an adult on a bike—guides a slowly moving group ride along a predefined route. Kids and their parents join the group on their own bikes when the pack rolls by.

  • Fill out the form! We currently have one that goes to GR Montessori and Congress Elementary and want to eventually add all schools (this is how the rest of the world does it!). If you’re interested, fill out the form and let’s figure out how to get one up and running at your school!

  • Back in the “old days” biking to school was normal, common even. Ask your boomer family members.

But nowadays most kids are spending their time commuting to school in cars.

Higher-income kids tend to get more exercise, with a doubling of household income associated with 13-minutes more time exercising.

Safe bicycling infrastructure affords kids of all income levels the benefit of exercise. Safe Routes to School increased active transit by 37% after implementation of the programs. LINK

Also, kids are vulnerable road users, which is basically a fancy way of saying they’re short, don’t comprehend distance as well as adults, and if they get hit by a car they’re more likely to suffer long-term or fatal injuries.

You know how people always say “We should do something about that?” Well, here you go, this is The Thing. Next steps? Show up to advocacy day and directly ask for protected bike lanes everywhere. Take a look at the map and tell the City Commission you want it! If you can’t show up, write an email to your commissioners.
